Oral Health

Protecting your smile is no game. As children begin participating in activities and organized sports it is important to remember to protect their smile. Sports mouthguards are a great option for your athlete. The American Dental Association estimates that mouthguards prevent more than 200,000 oral injuries each year.

Mouthguards will probably prove to be the most important, yet least expensive piece of safety gear you buy. Not only do they protect teeth and gums from injury, but they also protect the jaw. Many sports now require the use of mouthguards, which can be found at many athletic stores or larger big-box retailers. While many sizes are available, custom ones made by your orthodontist often provide a more comfortable and precise fit.

And for our patients wearing braces, we highly recommend the use of custom mouthguards since a hit to the mouth could lead to lacerations or other serious injuries. Over time they can begin to deteriorate so look for bent, misshaped or broken pieces. Protective cases are available to extend the life of your mouthguard.
